Course Description

3 semester hours.  This course is offered for undergraduate students from faculties of chemistry, biology and computer science. Recent advances in fields such as bioinformatics, proteomics, genomics, and pharmacogenomics increased demand for people with combined experience in biology and computer science. As a part of their undergraduate curriculum students from computer science faculty taking this course will be exposed to notions and techniques used in molecular biology labs and students with biology background will have an introduction to computer programming, and using computers to retrieve and analyze biological data.. Laboratory experiments will teach students basic techniques used in modern molecular biology labs. Bioinformatics labs will give hands on experience with bioinformatics online tools and databases and introduce programming as a new important laboratory skill.  back to top

Important Policies

Add/Drop Policy.  Students can add up until the 4th class day.  Movement into and out of classes after the 4th class day requires approval of the Department Chair. Students can drop until mid-semester without a WP or WF. Drops after mid-semester require approval of the Dean.   You are responsible for your enrollment status with the college.  back to top

Attendance Policy

Regular or punctual attendance is expected but in this class attendance is not taken at any class or laboratory meeting.  You are responsible for obtaining any information distributed during those times.  back to top

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.  Dishonesty will result in assignment of a failing grade on that exercise or examination. back to top

Computer Lab Schedule

The class will meet in the Distance Learning class for a short pre-lab (introduction). You are expected to complete the exercises during the scheduled meeting times. The lab exercises will follow the lecture topics.

Performance

Performance will be based on your punctuality, preparation, time management and participation. 

Laboratory Results

The results of your lab exercise need to be printed after every laboratory and signed by the TA.

Midterm examination

See the schedule for dates and times. Format will include but is not limited to multiple choice, short answer and essay type questions. Context will include any material covered during lecture or laboratory. 

Oral Presentation

Topics

The project should be based on a biological question which can be answered using already-existing bioinformatics tools. A list of suggested topics is available here but you may also choose your own, subject to approval.

Grading

The project's grade will be based on a 10 to12 minute presentation to the class. The grade will not be based on whether you produced exciting or positive results but rather on intelligent use of the correct tools.
